What distinguishes a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon from all other physicians performing cosmetic surgery? The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a not-for-profit organization comprising 24 medical specialty boards, is the pre-eminent entity overseeing physician certification in the United States. The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. is the only ABMS recognized board whose mission is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and re-certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. No other credentialing organizations (including the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery which are open to dermatologists, otolaryngologists, gynecologists, ets.) carries such distinction and is recognized by the ABMS. Furthermore, no other surgeons other than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon is eligible to become a member of the ASPS and the prestigious ASAPS.

American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The mission of ASPS is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery. The society advocates for patient safety, such as requiring its members to operate in accredited surgical facilities that have passed rigorous external review of equipment and staffing. The society works in concert with the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF) which supports research and educational programs for plastic surgeons.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is the leading organization of board-certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery. ASAPS Active-Member plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
