What is a body lift?
These are usually performed on both men and women, and it is truly a resculpting of the abdomen, hips, thighs, back and buttocks by removing excess skin and fatty tissue. Broken into its components, the body lift includes a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), a thigh lift, and a buttock lift.
A body lift is not a surgical treatment for being overweight. Obese individuals who intend to lose weight should postpone all forms of body contouring surgery until they have reached a stable weight. The body lift procedure is performed 12-18 months after bariatric surgery patients as well as patients who have not had weight loss. The body lift transforms patients that have experienced massive weight loss and have excess skin. However, results are just as dramatic in patients who in addition to a tummy tuck want a tightening of the skin in their thighs and buttocks. The body lift has the advantage that it can be done in one surgical session, or in stages, depending on the patients needs.
What is involved in the lower body lift?
A body lift is an outpatient procedure, however overnight accommodations can be arranged if needed. Excess skin and fat from the entire midsection of the body is removed. The skin closure is tailored to enhance the figure. There are a variety of different techniques for a body lift. A body lift can be combined with other forms of body-contouring surgery, including suction-assisted lipectomy, male chest reduction, thigh lift and arm lift or performed at the same time with any other elective surgeries.
What to expect during the recovery period:
- Following the body lift procedure patients should plan to be out of work for 2 weeks.
- Pain and discomfort are managed with medication.
- A specific dietary plan may be encouraged.
- Drainage tubes might be inserted, which will require personal home care for up to two weeks.
- You might be provided with a medical compression garment to wear at all times except while bathing. Dr. Pielet will let you know it is no longer needed.
- Dressings are generally removed two days after surgery and showering is allowed at that time.
- Your post-surgery activities will likely be restricted until you have adequately recovered. This could include no exercise and no lifting of five pounds or more. Walking is encouraged after surgery; however, further exercise is not recommended until sufficient healing has occurred.
- Most people require 7-10 days off work and four to six weeks’ recovery before returning to normal activities. In six to eight weeks, you can resume exercising.
- Approximately 75 percent of the swelling dissipates at six weeks and 90 percent at three to six months.
