An Otoplasty (commonly referred to as Ear Surgery) is performed to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. It can also be performed to correct various earlobe and ear deformities and tears or trauma related to the wearing of heavy earrings.

How is an Otoplasty performed?
Otoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure. A variety of different techniques and approaches may be used to reshape congenital prominence in the ears or to restore damaged ears. Each individual seeking otoplasty is unique both in terms of the appearance of their ears and expectations for results following otoplasty surgery. It is important to remember that the two ears on any given person might normally vary in size and shape. Various measurements will be made at your initial consultation. A small incision is made in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage will then be sculpted and bent back toward the head. Stitches will be made to maintain the new shape. Sometimes, a small amount of cartilage will be removed to enhance or maintain the new shape. It is important that you fully discuss your expectations with Dr. Pielet prior to surgery.
This procedure takes approximately 1 hour, but may vary.
What to expect during the recovery period:
- You head will be wrapped in a bandage for a few days to promote the best healing and molding
- Ears may ache or throb a little for the first few days, but can be controlled with medication
- Stitches will be removed or dissolve in approximately 1 week
- Any activity involving the ear being bent should be avoided for at least 4 weeks
- You might be advised to wear a headband (similar to a fleece headband that skiers wear) for a few weeks.
